prayer & fasting

Join us March 12th-April 9th (Easter) for a month of Prayer and Fasting. We participate in these disciplines both individually, but also together as a community. This page is full of resources of different tools and methods for prayer and fasting, but what matters is the heart. A surrender and excitement for God to move in our lives and in the community around us. For His will to be done and the joy that comes from being obedient to Him.

Together as a community we will fast on Tuesdays, though traditionally from food (one meal or the whole day) you can fast from coffee, social media, tv, etc. We will fast from the things of this world, but feast on the things of God with time with prayer. Each Tuesday will focus on the Four Fields from Mark 4:26-29. You are also invited to prayer and fast for a personal request (clarity, discernment, freedom from a sin, etc)

There are several tools for prayer and opportunities to Prayer Walk to be help you engage and a part of your journey

We look forward to this time as a community where we come expectant for God to move amongst us.

Tuesday Prayer & Fasting Guide/Prompts

Tuesday April 4th Prayer Prompts- Gather

As believers, we gather together in community, committed to one another, praying for one another, sharing life with one another, coming together as a church, all committed to the mission of Jesus. Spend time praying for your House Church- for each member to grow in Christ, intercede for any personal prayer requests, pray for your house church’s mission of the Gospel. Pray for the other House Churches in the TBHTX network. Pray for healthy, Gospel-centered churches to be multiplied from our midst. Pray for the other churches in Houston. Pray for the global Church.

Verses: Acts 2:36-47; Acts 12:24

Four Fields: Mark 4:26-29

And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

Mark 4:26-29 is a picture that Jesus gives of God's Kingdom and how He will bring it about. As Christ-followers, we can look to this as an example of how we are to bring the good news of His Kingdom realities to this world in disciplemaking.

  • Vs. 26

    • We see a man (farmer).

    • The farmer finds an empty field. This is a picture of the people and places that have not heard the gospel yet. We are to GO and find the people and places that the Gospel is not present in.

    • The farmer plants seeds in this empty field. This is the work of sharing the GOSPEL of Jesus.

  •  Vs. 27-28

    • 1 Corinthians 3:6-8 tells us that we plant and water but God causes the growth. This is God's promise to bring about His Kingdom restoration. The farmer tends to the crops as best as they know but is incapable to actually make the seed grow. This is the work of discipleship. We tend to one another in follwoing Christ but it is God who causes things to GROW.

  • Vs. 29

    • We see that God will keep His promise. That is what the Harvest is meant to illustrate. There will be a day when all is restored. We live in a time where God is both fulfilling this promise in the utlimate sense but has also already fulfilled it in Christ in the our present spriitual experience. We can look to this harvest in the context of our making disciples as the the Gathering of Christ followers in to Gospel communities (churches).

Fasting Resources

Fasting is an inward discipline of abstinence where we practice voluntary denial of an otherwise normal function for the sake of casting our mind's attention and heart's affection on God.

The heart behind it

     • Jesus himself fasted as a means of connecting deeper with God

     • Focused, undistracted time in prayer that can lead to clarity and God's guidance

     • Dependency and draw our hearts closer to God

     • Deepens our delight and joy in God over the things of this world

     • Removes distractions & reveal the state of our heart, sin, & idols

     • Scripture: Matthew 6:16-18; Joel 2:12-13; Isaiah 58; Luke 4:1-13; Matthew 6:31-33

The Practice

     • Choose a time, as a community we will fast on Tuesdays.

     • Choose what you're fasting from

     • Scripture primarily refers to fasting from food but can also be social media, entertainment, food group, caffeine, skipping one meal, etc

     • NOT recommended for those with health conditions or struggled with eating disorders

     • During you meal time, spend that time in the Presence of God, in worship, prayer, and Scriptures

     • Any time hunger cues or a desires comes up, stop, pause, and pray/ listen to God. Confess your need for Him and satisfaction in Christ.
